Kids in Love, Baller, 2011

1.Kids in Love

『Kids in Love』

2. Untitled, (T-Shirt Weather Heaven), 2013

3. Il Est Pour Nous (2012

—Did you like to make things as a child? Also, can you tell us about the first time you remember touching a camera?

I have been making things my entire life. Art is necessary to process my emotions. I remember picking up a camera just for fun when I was 8, but it wasn’t until I was 11 that it was really my way of breathing.

—You have been working as a photographer since you were in your teens. What creative philosophies that you have maintained since the beginning of your career? In contrast, have there been any changes in your creative approach?

I think it is so important, especially after working as a photographer commercially so young, to make sure that I always trust my gut and that I make work to make work in addition to it being my job. It’s all a balance. I just have to keep trusting myself. That’s become even more important as I’ve progressed.

—With so much young photographer out there, what do you think is the reason so many world-leading brands choose your work?

My work came from a young person talking about young people, but it was eloquent.

—How do you choose subjects in your personal projects? You have often appeared in your works. What is the intent behind it?

I take pictures of people I love. These photographs come with trust. The photographs of myself initially came from me being the one who was always around, and I was a little bit nervous to ask to take photographs of others. Then they became the way I self reflected, and also how I played all of the characters in my mind. Sometimes when I feel really sad I feel like the photographs I make of myself are the only thing that will always love me.

—Which established photographer and young photographer do you respect the most?

I love Nan Goldin for her honesty, Gregory Crewdson for his glory and cinema, Harley Weir for her sensuality, Ren Hang for his playfulness and strangeness. Rest in paradise.

—You have shot a couple of short films, and do you have any plan to shoot a movie in a future?

Yes, I am writing! That’s my dream!

1. Kids in Love, 2008-2014

Kids in Love is a group of photographs that I made when I was a teenager. They were direct documentation of my world as it unfolded around me. I experienced those moments. Most of the photographs were made in Portland, Oregon from 2008-2014. One photograph from Paris, one from New York. These photographs are dear to my heart.

2. Untitled, (T-Shirt Weather Heaven), 2013

After we made a video for Hermès, Tuesday brought home the fish we shot with in a bathtub. She drove down to LA with her boyfriend and they died in the car :(

3. Il Est Pour Nous, 2012

Il Est Pour Nous is a film I wrote and directed for Hermes in 2012. My boyfriend at the time, Cooper, stars in it with me. It was an amazing project where Hermes sent me 30 scarves in the mail and I just made whatever I wanted to. I wrote, directed, starred in, casted, location scouted, edited, styled, set designed the whole thing. I don’t think it’s a great representation of my work anymore, but I love it!

Olivia Bee is a photographer from Portland, Oregon, now with a bedroom in Brooklyn, New York, but with a life out of a suitcase that takes her nearly everywhere. Growing up, Olivia was encouraged to engage with nature and to make art every day. In middle school, she started photographing her life, the one she dreamt up, and the one she lived, and posting the results online. After the recognition her pictures received on social media, Converse commissioned Olivia, at the age of fifteen, to shoot her first ad. She has since gone on to shoot for brands such as Hermès, Levi’s, Adidas, Cacharel, Nike, and Roger Vivier, and editorial features for publications such as The New York Times Magazine, New York Magazine, Le Monde, and Vogue.com, as well as creating content for select musicians on Atlantic Records and Interscope Records, and her photography has been featured in two solo shows at Agnès B, New York, and Bernal Espacio, Madrid. Now twenty-three, she takes photographs all over the world and continues to explore our relationships to others, love, America, and the natural world.
