—I have heard that you are originally from Brazil. Did you like to draw or make things as a child?

Yes. I was born in Brazil from Italian parents. Since I am a child, I have always been creative, I love to draw and paint. This is something I still do today when I have the chance to get some free time.

—What drove you to move from Brazil to Milan?

Milan was a first natural choice for me, as I wanted to develop my skills in the Art and Design industry. Italian designers have always drawn me: Gio Ponti, Franco Albini, etc.

—Tell us about how did you start your career as a graphic designer?

I first started to do graphic design for different type of companies, mostly branding. Then I started to work in fashion, when Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana asked me to work for them, which I did for 3 seasons. Then I continued as a freelancer and also got into business, partnered with an Italian graphic designer Susanna Cucco, I worked with her for 2 or 3 seasons. At some point I had a Brazilian client, for whom I needed to do the fashion campaign and that’s when I met Steven Klein who had been a key person in my career.

Indeed, after this project I started to work with him and I started to think about moving to New York and I did. When I arrived there, I kept two of my Italian clients Dsquared2 and S Max Mara and years after years growing until I could finally in 2001 form my own agency GB65.

—How did your own agency GB65 come into being?

Few years after I started to work in the fashion and entertainment industry, I had the chance to see my client portfolio growing. It allowed me to refine my own vision and image as a creative. After that, it just came naturally to me to start my own Creative Agency, GB65.

—Why 65?

It is my year of birth. I was born in 1965.

—Are there any creative philosophies you have maintained since the agency was founded?

Everything you do, do it with passion. It has to translate in what we provide, for each client we have. This is a way to create a true emotion.

—Compare to now with the era you established your own agency in 2001, how have the business strategies changed in fashion industry?

Today more than ever you must have a 360-degree approach when you work on a project. A lot of things had changed since I first started. There are so many communications platforms today and it is important to adapt and develop a strategy that will include and fit all of these platforms especially the digital ones.

—Tell us about your basic creative process when creating campaign visuals?

Starting with the client’s brief, we elaborate and come up with concepts that fit with the brand image and strategy according to the season and develop unique strategies to enhance the longterm growth of each brand. Intervening at all stages of the production, paying attention to details and bringing together the right blend of art direction, design and top class photography. From concepts to final layouts.

—What do you feel are essential elements when bringing out the charm of brands as visuals?

The most important is to be fully aware of the brand history and the directions they want to take. Once you have a clear idea of that, translating their message just become clear. Then we can start to elaborate a strategy and begin our creative process.

—What are you most mindful of during editorial design like catalogs?

A catalog must be an impactful platform to communicate the brand. You have to express the DNA of the brand and stay coherent with the other platforms you already used for the season. You just have more “ingredients” to play with ; color, texture, cover material, paper options, layouts, binding, etc.

—Where do you get your inspiration to feed your creative process?

I am mostly inspired by famous photographers work, art, design, architecture, movies and music. I am a huge fan of books and collect them for years, I have a library that I am really proud of and where I take my inspiration most of the time.

—What meaning does fashion have for you as an art director?

As I always say, Fashion is a fusion everything I am interested in. Mixing art, photography, design, architecture, etc. It is the perfect channel to express yourself and your vision.

—What kind of projects are you currently working on? And what field would you like to challenge in the future?

For now my team and I are working on the new upcoming campaigns, few editorials and other amazing projects. I’d love to continue my journey with my studio and my team. — To develop and create exciting projects. And always keep my eyes wide open to grow and to bring more to the industry.
