YOHJI YAMAMOTO

The company was founded in 1972 under the name of Y’s. The designer Yohji Yamamoto was born in Shinjuku, Tokyo in 1943. After graduating from Keio University, he studied fashion at the Bunka Fashion College. In 1977, he showed at Tokyo fashion week under the name Y’s. When he debuted at Paris fashion week, together with Rei Kawakubo’s COMME des GARÇONS (which was also her debut at Paris), they destroyed the taboo in the mode fashion world and shocked the audience by showing a collection that was a antithesis to a stereotypical western approach to fashion design. Thereafter, they have received a high reputation both internationally and domestically. In 1984, Yohji Yamamoto Inc. was founded. Currently, Yohji Yamamoto continues to reach out to various audience through both their women and menswear line, as well as “Y’s” and “Y-3” which is co-produced with adidas.
