ファッション写真界のアップカマー、Rebekah Campbell (レベカ・キャンベル) インタビュー

ニューヨークの新進気鋭フォトグラファーが挙げられる際、度々その名を目にする写真家 Rebekah Campbell (レベカ・キャンベル)。アート学生時代からすでに頭角を現していた彼女は、24歳という若さですでに『i-D』『Vogue (ヴォーグ)』『Dazed (デイズド)』などのエディトリアル・ワークを手がけ、Marc Jacobs (マーク ジェイコブス) や Coach (コーチ) を始めとした著名ブランドのプロジェクトもこなしている。「青春」「美」「女性らしさ」といったキーワードを起点に、率直で瑞々しい感性から生まれるその表現とは。

—フォトグラファーとして活動することになったきっかけを教えて下さい。

本当は気が遠くなるぐらい長いストーリーがあるんだけど、簡潔に言うと、10代の頃に写真制作に魅了されて、Savannah College of Art and Design (サヴァンナ芸術工科大学) へ進学したの。19歳の時には Cass Bird (キャス・バード) のもとでインターンをしつつ、自分に関連するイメージ・メイキングの分野を必死に模索していた。ニューヨークに拠点を移してからはより一層仕事をするようになって、今では一人前のフォトグラファーになったと言えるかしら？でも、“一人前”なんて言葉は意味が広すぎて好きじゃないわ。

—写真家として掲げているテーマはありますか？

真の意味での青春や美しさ、女性らしさ、空想、そして感覚を探求している。

—作品には、コラージュやペインティングなどの要素も見られますが、そのように発展したのはなぜですか？また、そうした要素が作品にどのような価値や影響を及ぼしていると思いますか？

メディアを融合させることはとても楽しいし、自分の写真に制限を設ける必要はないと思っている。作品に自分自身の痕跡がより多く見られるほど、その人がリーチできる直感のレベルが高いということ。私はペインティングがとても好きだし、コラージュとペインティングの組み合わせは、明らかに次のステップに繋がったと思う。影響に関して言えば、単純に私の作品を見た人がまた違った感情を抱いてくれるという点かな。そして、私はその反応を見るのが好きなの。

—主に同世代の若い女性を被写体としていますが、その理由を教えて下さい。

今現在の生活の中で、女性は私のお気に入りの被写体。女性でなければ、私を引き込んでくれるような人々を選んでいるわ。カメラを通して得られる知識や、その知識を、撮影する側もされる側も理解しているという状態が好き。女性を撮影することは、感受性や類似した力の結合、そして強さを表すことに繋がっているのだと思う。

—あなたのように若い世代の写真家が活躍していくために、必要不可欠な要素とは何だと思いますか？

強い自意識、コネクションを持つ力が必要とされるという意味での社会性、そして何が重要で、何が重要でないかを理解すること。

—今、最も注目しているトレンドはありますか？

トレンドは薄っぺらだし、すぐに移り変わるものだから距離を置いているわ。アーティストたちが (人のアイデアを) 盗むっていうのは確かにある話だけど、私は今まで誰も見たことのないような、いわば“ブラックホール”のようなものを生み出していきたいと思っている。

インタビューに加えて、彼女の主観的な視点でお気に入りの12作品を選んでもらい、普段は語られることのないそれぞれのストーリーについて解説してもらった。

1.「Alana smoking before I met her」(2016)

この写真はAlana (アラーナ) に出会う前に撮ったの。LAで、あるオープニング・パーティーに参加した時に、彼女は私の友人と話していたんだけど、「私の横でタバコを吸っているこのブロンドのエンジェルは誰？」って思いながら撮影したわ。

2.「Camilla’s dots」(2015)

これは、雑誌『i-D』のプロジェクトで撮影した時に、使われなかった写真。Camilla (カミラ) のアパートで太陽の日差しを浴びながら、この上なく幸せな2時間を過ごしたわ。コーヒーを飲みながら、お互いの元カレや、今気になっている人の話をしたりね。このドットは、彼女がかぶろうとしていた麦わら帽子から差し込んだ光なの。

3.「Feels like clouds, Grace」(2016)

私がとても忙しかった週に、Grace (グレース) はうちのアパートに泊まっていった。Grace といる時、私はいつもカメラを持っているから、いつか彼女の写真集を作りたいと思っているわ。私たちには、起きてすぐにアーモンドラテとピーナツバタークッキーを買いに行くっていう朝のルーティーンがあるの。

4.「Hayett in Color I」(2016)

数ヶ月前は、被写体にペインティングするのにはまっていた。Hayett (ヘイエット) は私のルームメイトの部屋に2、3週間滞在していて、私たちは天気が良くて暑い日曜日にこの作品を作ったわ。彼女は私が今まで見たことのないような人間に仕上がったから、たくさんのことを考えさせられた。

5.「Jack and Brionka for MC」(2016)

雑誌の撮影で、ニューヨーク州北部のアップステートにあるこの美しい湖を訪れたの。気が狂いそうなほど寒い日で、地面には氷や雪がまだ残っていたんだけど、Brionka (ブリオンカ) はこの時、生まれて初めて雪を見たと言っていた。2人は完璧に偽のカップルを演じてくれたわ。

6.「Julia for ODDA」(2016)

Julia (ジュリア) は私が世界一好きな人物のひとり。彼女はこの時、水に入らせる私を恨んでいたわ。だって、3月のニューヨークで、極寒の中撮影したからね。でも、私にとってこれは特別なエピソードなの。

7.「Ruby and Kate Red」(2016)

私は全く知らない人同士を、あっという間に打ち解けさせるのが好き。

8.「Sasha eclipsed」(2016)

親友のSasha (サーシャ) の撮影に10分以上費やしたのはこれが初めてだったわ。私のアパートで午後の間ずっと撮影をしていた。この時ほどインスパイアされることは、今後ないかもしれない。

9.「Sasha for Pressure Paris」(2016)

Sasha (サーシャ) って名前の女の子を撮影するのが好き。これは、パリのアート雑誌のために自分のスタジオで撮った写真。

10.「The secret was always the jets, Lili」 (2016)

この時まで、一度もロンドンを訪れたことがなかった私に、街を案内してくれた女の子がこのLili (リリー)。私たちはブロードウェイ・マーケットに行って、最高に美味しいものを食べたわ。彼女と世界や本について話すのはとても楽しかった。

11.「Willy for BLVD」 (2016)

この日は、Willy (ウィリー) とスタイリストのAnna (アナ)、そして私という、とても小規模なチームで撮影をしたの。初めて訪れたビーチだったんだけど、転がったりトイレで着替えをしたり、その日がいかに暑かったかを話して笑っていた。

12.「Zack at the bowery」 (2016)

Zack (ザック) は私の友人を訪ねてきたんだけど、こんなに美しい男の子を見たのは初めてだった。彼の笑顔はとても眩しかったわ。

ニューヨークに拠点を置くフォトグラファー。近年は、女性らしさや今にも壊れそうな青春時代を題材にした、写真制作に取り組んでいる。Savannah College of Art and Design で就学した後に、学士を取得。最近では、マルタの St James Cavilier (セイント ジェームズ キャヴァリエ) にてエキシビションを開催している。

—Tell us about how did you start your career as a photographer?

Saving you from a daunting long story, I found that I was drawn to making photos in my teenage years and went on to attend the Savannah College of Art and Design. I interned with Cass Bird when I was 19.  Scathing around trying to find a sector of image making that I connected with. After moving to New York, I began working more and more and now I think I can call myself one? I hate that description. It’s a very broad term.

—Are there any particular themes you maintain as a photographer?

I like to explore elements of youthhood, beauty, femininity, escapism and feeling in the truest sense of the word.

—Some of your works are composed with collage and painting elements. How did you develop the idea? Also, what do you feel is the value and effect of these elements in your work?

Mixed media is always something I enjoy, because why limit yourself to one sort of image? There is a lot to be said with the level of intuition you can reach when more traces of yourself are found in a piece. I really enjoy painting as well and mixing the two was the obvious next step. The effect is simply another sort of feeling when the audience sees it, I like to inspect that.

—Tell us the reason why you mainly choose young women as your subjects?

Right now in my life, females are my favorite subject. If not females, than humans. People that let me in. I love the knowledge that comes through the camera and you know it and the individual you are photographing knows it. Photographing women; It’s a sensitivity, a conjoining of similar forces, it’s strong.

—What do you feel are essential elements for young photographer?

A strong sense of self, social skills in that you need an ability to connect, and knowing what’s important and what’s not.

—Do you have any culture or trends you pay attention to?

I try to stay away from trends, they’re frivolous and move on so fast. It’s true that artists steal but think of all the things that you haven’t seen in your lifetime, that’s what is the black hole; that’s what I want to make.

<Concept of works>

1. ‘Alana smoking before I met her’ (2016)

This was taken before I met her, we were at an opening in LA, and she came up to a friend of mine and started chatting. I thought who is this blonde angel smoking next to me?

2. ‘Camilla’s dots’ (2015)

These are outtakes for a project I did for iD magazine, I spent two blissful hours with Camilla at her apartment. It was sun drenched. We drank coffee and talked about ex boyfriends and new prospective ones. The dots are from this weaved hat she was trying on.

3. ‘Feels like clouds, Grace’ (2016)

Grace slept over at my apartment because I was having a hard week. I want to make a book with her because I always have my camera on me when we are together.  We have a routine of waking up in the morning and getting almond lattes and peanut butter cookies as soon as humanly possible.

4. ‘Hayett in Color I’ (2016)

A few months ago, I loved painting my subjects. Hayett was staying in my roommate’s bedroom for a couple of weeks and we did this on a beautiful hot Sunday. She looks like no one I’ve ever seen and makes my brain think about a lot of things.

5. ‘Jack and Brionka for MC’ (2016)

We went upstate to a beautiful lake for this editorial, it was insanely cold outside with ice and snow still on the ground. It was the first time Brionka had seen snow in her life. They made a perfect fake couple.

6.「Julia for ODDA」(2016)

Julia is one of my favorite people in this world, she hated me for making her get in the water. It was March in New York, the air was frigid. This story is special to me.

7. ‘Ruby and Kate Red’ (2016) 

I like playing with the idea of making strangers get to know each other very quickly.

8. ‘Sasha eclipsed’ (2016)

This was the first time I spent more than ten minutes with one of my best friends, Sasha. We took photos all afternoon in my apartment and I don’t know if I’ll ever be more inspired.

9. ‘Sasha for Pressure Paris’ (2016)

I like photographing girls named Sasha. We took photos in my studio for an art magazine in Paris.

10. ‘The secret was always the jets, Lili’ (2016)

I had never visited London before and Lili showed me around like the doll she is. We went to Broadway Market and ate some of the best food. I like talking to Lili about the world and books.

11. ‘Willy for BLVD’ (2016)

Our team this day was so small. Willy, the stylist Anna, and I. I had never been to this beach before and it was rolling around and changing in bathrooms and laughing at how hot it was.

12. ‘Zack at the bowery’ (2016)

Zack was visiting for a friend of mine, I thought I’ve never seen a beautiful boy such as you. His smile is so bright.
